The overuse of “Green” may have you seeing red, but hype is a normal part of the evolution of new technologies. The issues driving the need for Green IT are real, and growing. Green computing or green IT, refers to environmentally sustainable computing, and is defined as the study and practice of designing, manufacturing, using, and disposing of computers, servers, and associated subsystems efficiently and effectively with minimal or no impact on the environment. The goals of green computing are to reduce the use of hazardous materials, maximize energy efficiency during the product’s lifetime, and promote the recyclability or biodegradability of defunct products and factory waste. Research continues into key areas such as making the use of computers as energy-efficient as possible, and designing algorithms and systems for efficiency-related computer technologies.

The number of personal computers in use worldwide will reach 2 billion by 2015 across the world, according to hi-tech consultancy Gartner Dataquest report. Some of the factors that will enable such a rapid proliferation of computers include a significant reduction in the price of hardware and software due to new technology, as well as the introduction of wireless Internet access to remote areas that previously had no such facilities. But this is not about technology growth. The point here is that computers can help save the trees.

Paper has been around since the Egyptians invented the paper making process some 4,000 years ago. Though the process has been refined over years but the basic raw material is pulp that is obtained from wood by cutting millions of trees around the world every year. The tissue paper we use so indiscriminately might contain fibers from so many different trees that might have jointly traveled thousands of kilometers and factories from forest to the dining table. The present trends are a big cause of concern because they are linked with numerous environmental problems, from deforestation to industrial pollution and environmental degradation.

The widespread use of computers and related technologies can make a big difference in paper consumption all over the world. Although a ‘paperless’ office is still far from reality, computer mediated technologies have made it possible to publish and distribute written words without using paper in the cyber age. The online connected World Wide Web is significantly affecting our paper consumption habits, as online publishing at industrial and individual levels with books, catalogs on commercial websites, blogs, online music downloads, etc. may slow down the use of paper. Furthermore, online newspapers, e-bills, financial payments and transactions, e-tickets and boarding passes save tons of paper every day.

Another smart use of technology to save paper is the humble digital photo frame. They are wonderful devices to showcase information in an attractive manner while saving paper at commercial establishments and increasing customer engagement. This allows easy updating of information along with attractive presentation, reducing the printing of paper brochures and information sheets. Bigger versions of this concept are huge LCD or LED panels at exhibitions, malls and outdoors. It stands to reason that there are a lot less printed posters and signs in landfills as a result digital signage taking its place.

Collaborative online applications to share and edit documents online limit paper consumption, postal services, ink use, printer energy and help keep all of your documents easily manageable and accessible. Other collaborative applications such as video conferencing and tele-presence are finding innovative uses from virtual business meetings to e-learning and medical consultations.

The biggest step towards saving trees is to utilise greener technology… remember, every little bit makes a difference.

The last year’s diaries and directories are the first to be thrown in the bin. The directories were as good as new although obsolete and the folders were in perfect shape. They could be used as raw materials for a green DIY project. I used my old Indian print top for a unique folder for my scrapbook and you can too.
Santa Fe, Indonesia is now partnering with us to plant one tree for every household goods (sea) move that Santa Fe, Indonesia books from effective 1 July. We expect that this will equate to close to 500 trees per year. A sustainable CSR initiative.

The staff members will participate in our next tree planting event on Saturday, 20th Nov.

Living Green is something we should all be concerned about. Making the world a better place for us and for future generations is very important. The damages we do today will have a significant impact on the rest of the world. Young children, adults, and even the elderly can all get involved in making the world a better place for all of us.following four simple rules: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and reforest.

REDUCE

… YOUR CONSUMPTION

The first step to reducing your impact on the environment, is reducing the amounts of resources you consume and use. Think twice before you buy or use anything. Do you really need it? By reducing your consumption you will also decrease the amount of waste you produce.

… YOUR WASTE

There are also many other ways to reduce your waste. The opportunities are nearly endless. Here are just a few ideas. If you “Think Green”, you’ll be able to think of lots more. Let your mind go wild, be creative!

REUSE

Plastic containers can become food storage, paper can become wrapping paper. The ways in which to reuse things are unlimited. All you need is to be creative.

BUY RECYCLED PRODUCTS

In order to make recycling work, collected recyclables need to be made into new useful products which are purchased and used. Buying recycled products is called “closing the loop”

RECYCLE

Everyone knows about recycling. It’s easy. It makes sense. We do it at home. While recycling is an excellent way to reduce how much waste ends up in a landfill, it can be an energy-intensive process that produces lower-quality or “downcycled” goods, especially with regard to plastics. Furthermore, recycling often requires the use of chemicals or fossil fuels for transport and/or process materials.

So be judicious and find ways in which products can be reused.

REFOREST

It’s the smallest thing but possibly the grandest gesture you can do today…

Plant a tree seed or sapling.an action, that helps our only planet – the planet we depend on and cling to – breathe a little easier (quite literally).

We all have the power and the ability to change what we are doing now in exchange for better ways of living. Decide now you want to modify your behaviors and feel good about your lifestyle choices. It doesn’t matter how long you have been doing things the other way.

Every bit of change that takes place out there is going to make a positive difference overall. Be a part of finding the solution for a better environment to live in. Do all you can to make these efforts a part of your world.

TS Suites and Core Hospitality are corporate examples of ‘being the change that we want to see in the world’ in Mahatma Gandhi’s words.

TS Suites (www.tssuites.com) has been collaborating with Yayasan Tanam Pohon Indonesia (www.onemilliontrees.org) since their launch last year, to plant a tree for every room night sold. So while providing a great service to their guests, the hotel is making a positive impact on the environment in Surabaya, making it the first truly ‘Green’ hotel in Indonesia. The trees will be planted in Surabaya in lots of 1000 trees by the staff of the hotel. Information about this program and YTPI will be available in each room and at the hotel reception.

Indonesia has the highest rate of deforestation in the world. It is only when individuals and corporations take a stand, can this global problem be tackled. TS Suites initiative is in line with the YTPI’s goal to create awareness of climate change and its implications and their ‘Green Rooms’ raise awareness about our individual responsibility for planting trees.

Randolph Bubu, owner of TS Suites and Karl Waelti, CEO of Core Hospitality International are the people who made this happen. Karl Waelti’s is passionate about education and training of staff for the Hospitality & Tourism Industries in the region. “It’s the extra thought that makes the difference”. It is this mission that the company and its managed hotels follow. Planting trees is yet another thought that is making a huge difference to the planet. This ‘green mindset’ is like a pair of spectacles that makes visible the ‘butterfly effect’ our every action has on the planet.

Karl says “In a competitive environment we need winners to work for us. We need people who do not just see this as only a job. Our mission helps everybody to understand that to be successful we must not only concentrate to make money but to do things better and different[ly]. Only then we are recognized and then the money will come as a result of the difference we have created. We want to be better than best.” He stresses that a hotel is a place of fun, joy and pleasure not merely for the guests but also for all the staff.

Every minute, we are losing one football-field-size of rainforest, accelerating the process of global warming. From draughts to flooding, the effects of climate change are enormous and immediate, making global warming a pressing concern for the world community to address.

YTPI was formed by a group of concerned people in April 2007 with the mission to react to increasing level of deforestation in Indonesia, raise awareness on environmental issues, take action against climate change, educate children on these issues and to Plant More TREES!

Since its formation, YTPI has planted over 260,000 trees with corporate partners, individual contributors and volunteers.

YTPI promotes biodiversity:

Yayasan promotes bio-diversity and also avoids planting very commercial trees like Jati. We feel that optimum benefits will accrue if we select rainforest, long lasting trees. Our choice of trees, so far has been made in consultation with the community in the chosen area and also keeping in mind the bio-diversity principle.

Sustainability:

For all our projects – we pay special attention to (“what will happen after we plant these trees”) the maintenance aspect. We have MOU’s to safeguard and maintain the trees planted, with the real estate developer (for example PT Sentul City) or an MOU with a local institution with the support of the local governmental authorities (like the MOU with SMK2 witnessed by the Bupati of Subang). These are serious commitments to preserve the trees for at least 40 years. Areas are chosen where progress can be monitored.

The Important Thing:

We aim to motivate and start a movement within Indonesia towards environmental love through reforestation, to benefit not only Indonesia but the whole world. We realize that this is not easy but with your assistance, we can heal the planet and leave it in a better shape for our children and grandchildren. Your charitable contributions help YPTI and ensure that the city is greener and healthier for its residents. Together we can improve our communities, one tree at a time!

We look forward to working with more such like minded organizations with YAYASAN TANAM POHON INDONESIA (YTPI). Do please visit our website at www.onemilliontrees.com for more information and to find out how you can participate with us.

It was a beautiful day, with not a cloud in the sky. The YTPI members demonstrated the correct method to plant the tree saplings as provided in each pit with fertilizer, supporting bamboo stick and string. It was the first time for many children to actually go down on their knees on bare earth and plant a tree. Similar to giving mother Earth a massage and partaking in a completely selfless act of giving.

Choose to plant trees as your ne xt company CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) project, and we can support you.

Initiative by Yayasan Tanam Pohon Indonesia (www.onemilliontrees.org)
Yayasan Tanam Pohon Indonesia with SMKN 2 Subang and the government of Kabupaten Subang successfully planted 100.000 trees on Saturday, 19 Januari 2008. This planting event is a pilot project for the one million trees planting event that will be held in Kabupaten Subang on October 2008 in an effort to reduce the effect of global warming.

“The threat of global warming is real! Starting from the annual floods, landslide, the rising of sea water that exceed normal level, to season change that can’t be predicted anymore” said Andy Hartono, the PIC for One Million Tree project. Andy explained, the effect of global warming is most felt by our farmers, who depend solely on farming activities.

In this event, Nangka (Artocarpus heterophyllus) and Asam Jawa (Tamarindus indica) were the chosen tree species that were planted with the hope that the fruits from these tree will benefit the local community.

“In the past, Subang had a lot of forest, very green. But take a look at Subang now. The mountain looks beautiful from one side, but if you look at it from the other side, it’s bald from logging” said Eep Hidayat, Bupati Subang, voicing his concern regarding Subang’s present environmental condition.

An MOU has been signed between Yayasan Tanam Pohon Indonesia, SMKN 2 Subang, and the office of Bupati Subang emphasizing that the trees planted during this event will be taken care of and will not be cut until at least the next 40 years.

This is indeed an extraordinary committment from the state government of Subang, and a step forward in preserving our beloved earth. Further, Bupati Subang explained that during his term, no logging permit was released from his office. “Don’t ever come to my office asking for a logging permit. I will never allow it!” said Eep Hidayat.
